Pet allergies? What really really works?

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
Melmoe asked:

I have allergies to both cats (hair) and dogs (dander and saliva - so they can’t “kiss me” or slobber on my pillows, etc). My doctor said I should just use Claritin, but I still got symptoms. I was wondering what you guys use that really works. I’m not a crazy pet chick, I could do w/o animals (and currently am) but I’d like to go back to having a cat or a dog sometime soon. Thanks for your help!

Pet May Be Suffering From Dog Food Allergies

Friday, November 27th, 2009
John Hilaire asked:

Food allergies are not exclusive to humans, but they can be difficult to diagnose in pets, especially when dog food allergies appear to manifest quickly. The biggest problem of course, is the pet’s inability to communicate the symptoms effectively, and they are many times confused with other ailments.

Symptoms of dog food allergies may include excessive scratching, hair loss, skin infections as well as ear infections. Most times antibiotics used for skin infections will clear them up briefly, but they will reoccur when the antibiotics are stopped. An animal with itchy skin that does not seem to improve with the use of antihistamines or steroids, may be suffering from food allergies.

There is also a difference between food allergies and food intolerance. An intolerance to certain foods may cause symptoms such as diarrhea or frequent bowel movements and vomiting. Fortunately, whether the animal is suffering from food Allergy or food intolerance, once the proper diagnosis has been made, they can both be treated.

Since most dog food is made from beef, chicken, wheat, eggs, soy and dairy products, it should be no surprise that most food allergies are caused by one of these ingredients. When pet food companies began producing lamb and rice formulations, many dog allergies seemed to disappear. Most veterinarians agree that it is not because of something special in the lamb and rice formula that reduced the incidences of food allergies in dog , rather it is the fact that the dog’s diet was changed and the animal has not developed an intolerance for the new food.

Dietary Change To Test For Food Allergies

Once other causes have been ruled out, such as flea bite allergies, intestinal parasites, yeast or bacterial infections a dietary change may be needed to reduce the symptoms of dog food allergies. A new food source containing protein and carbohydrate should be the only diet of the pet for at least 12 weeks to determine which of the ingredients in their old pet food was causing the allergic reaction.

The food source must be completely different from what the animal was used to and cannot be supplemented with treats or other types of food if the test is to be effective. Once it has been determined the pet is not having an adverse reaction to the new diet, different foods can be added to help develop a more diverse diet. However, any addition must go through the same test procedures and if any reaction is noted, the new addition will need to be eliminated.

Food Allergy In Dogs: Their Next Bite Could Be Worse Than Their Bark!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Abhishek Agarwal asked:

In today’s world allergy caused by food is the most common disease. You have to keep in mind that these allergies could hamper your comfort in your daily routine. This means that you will be unable to carry out your daily routine properly. You have to take into consideration that your dog could experience this allergy.

When your dog is capable of carrying the allergy you should monitor your pet as allergies could affect your dog in many ways which could be life threatening. You must be aware of the symptoms and the sign of your pet’s (dog) allergies as it is very hard to detect. One should take at most care as you should realize that the dog cannot express its feelings. It is necessary for you to keep in track with the symptoms it shows so that you’re able to detect the allergy properly. This will help you to manage the pet properly.

Nowadays dogs eat different types of processed foods and allergy caused by food is the third common causes of allergies. Like in human allergy, the immune system of dogs overreacts to certain type of food which will trigger the immune system so that histamines get released to fight of the invader. The invader generally doesn’t harm the dogs but the immune system over do’s it and mistakes it as harmful.

You can see that the dogs have itching in different parts of its body if it suffers from the food allergy attack. Itching takes place in the foot, face, belly, limb and they will experience recurrent infections in ear which could irritate and make them restless. They will probably not be active as usual, and they would refuse to take any food and could vomit.

Staring at you in the face is the main cause for food allergy. Nowadays the dog foods that are available in several pet shops contain ingredients (junk) which could cause allergic reactions for your dog. The proteins that are found in chicken, beef, wheat, dairy, chicken eggs are the main causes of allergies in dogs. You can also notice that the ingredients that are mentioned above are the main ingredients to be found in dog foods. Switching your dogs diet is very important as it determines what types of food causes the allergy to the dog.

Dogs should be taken to the vet quite often in order to carry out a number of physical examinations which will determine the type of ingredient in dog foods which causes the allergy. Once this allergen is found, the vet will recommend that the dog should change its diet from regular food that has the allergens to hypoallergenic food. Even though the hypoallergenic food is costlier that the popular and regular dog food, you could be sure that you’re pet will always be in proper shape and will live a happy, peaceful life. But while giving the hypoallergenic food you should maintain proper diet so that any kind of mistakes doesn’t take place. This food also ensures no side effects, be it external or internal, on the body takes place.

Homemade diets can be chosen but you should keep In mind that minerals and vitamins should be balanced carefully so that adequate nourishment is provided for your dog needs. The proper diet plan will be provided by the veterinarian.

With the correct and systematic treatment, the dog will surely be able to live in a peaceful manner with minimized risk of attacks.

Dog Food Allergies - Secrets and Cures

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
Michelle Jones asked:

Dogs just like men have allergies too. That is why dog food allergies are one of the most common types of allergies and as a pet owner, you need to be aware of it and find ways to cure it.

When your dog is allergies to a certain type of food, it is important and sometimes vital to his health that you discover exactly what this type is and avoid it in his diet.

Because some types of body allergic responses can even be fatal, while some will just cause irritation in your dog.

Dog allergies are very similar to human allergies. Just like when we are allergic to a specific fruit or food, what we do as the solution is that we avoid it.

The same goes with your dog too. There is usually no cure for allergic dogs, but to simply avoid the type of food they are allergic to.

But there is an important question you need to ask first…

“Does my dog really has allergies?”

Because sometimes it is not easy to tell the difference between your dog not liking a certain food, being sick, or being allergic to it.

Here are some common signs of allergies to help you find out:

Scratching - because of skin irritation

Sneezing

Coughing

Hair loss

Vomiting

If you see one of more of the above signs quite often, never assume that this is just a new habit your dog picked up. Dog allergies can make your dog very uncomfortable.

Take your dog to the vet or keep a careful eye of him to find out if he is allergic to his food.

You can change his diet to test different food and see which one he reacts to.

If you think your dog most likely has allergies, you can try the best and easiest dog allergies treatments to help cure your dog’s problem.

Top 10 Causes of Allergies

Monday, November 16th, 2009
Steve Marshal Caldwell asked:

Allergies are the outcomes of the attack of the allergens on our body. In simple words, allergies are caused by the allergens. Allergies are considered to be the one of the most common diseases that are affecting the humans. In the life time every human at least suffers from the allergies once. Allergies are not severe diseases but, can turn into the troublesome nature if the care is not taken at the preliminary stage. Allergies are caused when the allergens in the atmosphere react with your body. Immune system of your body immediately comes in action and releases the histamines that in turn cause the allergic reaction. Allergies can be caused of anything in the atmosphere, from what you eat, from what you drink, etc. The allergy can be caused by the anything that stimulates your immune system and makes it release the histamines that are not needed and these in turn cause the allergies. Here, are the main causes of the allergies.

1. Pollen grains from trees, plants, and grasses

Pollen grains are released from the trees, plants, and grasses during the pollination period. The pollination takes place with the help of air as a medium. When these pollens move from one plant to another through the air, there is a high chance of inhalation of these pollens by the humans. As a result, these pollens enter the human body thorough the nose, ear, eyes, or mouth and cause the allergies. These allergies are usually caused in particular seasons when the pollens are released from the plant i.e. pollination season. Hay fever and allergic rhinitis are the common diseases caused by the allergies from the pollens. Symptoms of these diseases include coughing and postnasal drip; itching eyes, nose, and throat; and dark circles under the eyes.

2. Smell

Smell allergy is new type of allergy and is not so common. Smell allergy is caused when you smell anything and the small particles or allergens which carry this smell enter your nostrils and makes you prone to the sneezing and coughing. Actually, it is not the smell but the allergens carrying the smell that cause the allergy. The most common type of smell allergy are—perfume allergy, allergy to the smell of particular flower (allergy to the smell of rose), or Petrol smell allergy.

3. Medicines

The allergy to the medicines is the new topic of discussion among all the doctors. Medicinal allergy is observed in the individual when the immune system reacts to the dosage of the drug making it to cause the side effects. Allergy to the medicines is the most dangerous of all the allergies. If you take the medicine that you all allergic to then it could lead to the serious consequences. Many individuals are found to be allergic to the antibiotics (penicillin); aspirin; or anaesthetics. That is the reason why the medicines should be strictly taken under the doctor’s supervision.

4. Insects

Insects bite is one of the most common causes of the allergies. When the insect bites, it releases some toxins in out body that cause the irritation of the skin. Sometimes, the reason for the allergies may not be the insect bite but only because of the release of the substances on our body during the insects walk that cause the allergic reaction. Thus, it is necessary to have the insect repellents at your house.

5. Fungal or mould spores (in the bathroom and other damp areas)

Fungal or moulds are found to be grown near the moist and dump areas in your areas or in nearby areas. They during the sporogenesis release the spores that cause the allergy to the humans. These spores when released in air or even water and if you come in contact with them you suffer from the allergies.

6. Pets

Pet allergies means these are not the allergies to the dogs or cats but, the allergies that are caused by the skin flakes and dander of these pets. As we all love our pets, so it is very necessary to maintain the hygiene of these pets so that they can live happy with us and we remain free from the pet allergies.

7. Drinks

This is the new form of the allergy that is caused by the drinks. Many people are found to be allergic to the soft drinks and hard drinks. Many individuals are found to be allergic to the alcohol. When these individuals take the alcohol there mouth starts getting the ulcers. Even when you drink the water that contains the allergens of some chemicals, you get the allergies of mouth and throat. Sometimes even the antigens enter your mouth and cause the allergies. Please avoid the drinking of contaminated water to remain away from the allergies.

8. Food

Allergies are most commonly caused by the foods that we eat. Food allergies shows the symptoms as mouth ulcers, irritation in the mouth, pain in the throat, immediate sneezing, etc. Food allergies occur when the immune system mounts an attack on certain proteins in certain foods. The immune system mistakenly sees a harmless substance in the food as harmful, and churns out antibodies-known as IgE - to attack it. This causes the allergies. The next time a person eats that food, the substance to which he is allergic (the allergen A substance that produces an allergic reaction) enters the body, and attaches to the IgE on mast cells. The mast cells respond by releasing a host of powerful chemicals, including histamine A chemical in certain body cells, which contributes to inflammation and causes itching, swelling, sneezing and other allergic symptoms., to ‘protect’ the body. This produces allergic symptoms. Individuals are found to be allergic to oily foods, cow’s milk, hen eggs, wheat, soya, seafood, fruit, and nuts.

9. Dust mites

Allergies are many times found to be caused by the dust mites that are present in your home or nearby area. House dust mites are tiny (up to 0.3 mm) animals related to ticks and spiders and live in house dust. There is not a house without them, but some houses contain huge numbers and other houses contain almost none. House dust mites eat the dust which comes from our skin all the time. They leave droppings everywhere they go. These droppings cause the allergies in humans. They mainly cause eczema or asthma.

10. Smoke

Smoke is one of the factors that causes allergy in the humans. Smoke is released by the chemical, cement, or perfume factories that contains the harmful antigens and lead to the allergy in humans Smoke released by the vehicles contains harmful carbon monoxide that causes irritation of eyes and nose. Last but not the least the smoke from the cigarettes contain the toxic substances that when released in air cause allergies and lead to the severe health hazards.

Beware: Your Pet Just Might Be Making You Sick

Sunday, November 15th, 2009
Brent McNutt asked:

Your beloved pet is one of the most precious things in your life. However, it may be possible that your pet is the source of your annoying allergies. Even though any animal covered with fur can be a source of allergy, the most common sources are cats, dogs, rats, and horses. Pet allergy is usually a problem that happens at home but it may also occur in places such as the zoo, animal farms, and so on.

Signs and Symptoms

Pet allergy occurs when certain animal proteins trigger the inflammation in the lining of your nasal passages called allergic rhinitis that may cause sneezing, runny nose, and other symptoms connected with hay fever.

It may also cause constriction of the lung airways that can lead to asthma, wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty in breathing. Pet allergy can also come in the form of allergic dermatitis, a reaction of the immune system that causes skin inflammation. Signs of this condition include red patches on the skin and itchy skin.

Aside from these, general symptoms itchy, red or water eyes, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, cough, itchy nose, itchy throat, facial pressure, swollen and bluish skin under the eyes, chest tightness, chest pains, and difficulty in sleeping.

Causes

Your immune system works to generate antibodies that protect the body against harmful viruses, toxins, and bacteria. When you have a pet, the immune system thinks that the protein found in the animal’s skin, saliva, or urine could harm you so its immediate reaction is to release antibodies that in turn produce an allergic inflammatory response in your nasal passages, lungs, or skin.

Home Remedies

The best way to treat pet allergy is to avoid exposure to pets. If you are a pet lover and you do not want to get rid of your precious pet, what you can do is to find a new home for your pet that you can visit once in a while.

After the pet leaves the house, make sure you clean your entire home thoroughly. Wash the ceilings, walls and floors to eradicate traces of fur, dander, and other things from your pet that may contain allergens.

Replace upholstery in the furniture, carpets, bed sheets, blankets, and pillowcases to completely remove all the pet allergens. Also, it would help to use air filters that trap allergens floating around the air.

Now if you really want to keep your pet, you can minimize the condition of pet allergy by bathing your pet frequently. Do not do this yourself since the activity may trigger your allergy. Ask a family member or friend that does not have allergies to bathe your pet every week.

Certain rooms in the house should be pet-free. These include bedroom and other private areas in your home. This would reduce allergen levels in the house. Furthermore, remove carpeting and other furnishings that may attract fur and danger. Instead of carpets, the better option would be tiles, wood, linoleum, or vinyl flooring.

Another idea would be to keep your pet outside or in the yard. You can build a nice home for your precious pet and make sure that all its needs are taken care of so you would not feel too bad about keeping it out of the house.

You love your pet but your health is more important so keep in mind these tips so you can avoid pet allergies that may have adverse effects in your overall wellbeing.

TWO SYMPTONS OF FLEA ALLERGY DERMATITIS – Dogs, Cats, Ferrets,Pets!

Saturday, November 14th, 2009
Matt asked:

How Will You Know If Your Pet Has FLEA ALLERGY DERMATITIS? Flea Allergy Dermatitis, or FAD for short, is the number one most common illness caused by fleas. Some vets that specialize in pet allergy say that as many as 40% of all pets may suffer from FAD.

Because the symptoms of FAD are not specific to FAD and could also mean that your pet has other skin problems or allergies it can be difficult to know if your pet might have FAD or if your pet has some other skin problem. Especially if you don’t see any fleas you might think it couldn’t possibly be FAD. If your cat or dog has FAD and not just any old skin problem you will notice your pet has these symptoms or starts to display these behaviors:

1. Severe itching - Anytime the air is dry your pet could get a little itchy. But if the itching is serious enough that it wakes your pet out of a sound sleep or if you can’t seem to stroke or hold your pet without it becoming itchy and uncomfortable that is severe itching. Also if you pet seems to spend less time sleeping than usual and more time itching that’s a definite sign of FAD.

2. Chewing and biting the tail, rump, back legs - Sometimes a pet with FAD will also check or lick at their front legs excessively. But most of the time it’s the area just above their tail, on their sides, and their back legs. If your pet is licking these areas, pulling the fur off these areas, or scratching and biting at those areas you can be pretty sure that your pet is suffering from FAD.
